Why is Jesus the ‘gift’ of Christmas?
To answer that we need to understand what a gift is…
– A gift is given without payment… It isn’t really a gift if you have to pay for it.
– A gift can be accepted or rejected (pushed aside).
– A gift is given by someone who was thinking about you.
From this basic understanding…
Let’s read Romans 3:21-24 (GNB) But now God’s way of putting people right with himself has been revealed. It has nothing to do with law, even though the Law of Moses and the prophets gave their witness to it. (22) God puts people right through their faith in Jesus Christ. God does this to all who believe in Christ, because there is no difference at all: (23) everyone has sinned and is far away from God’s saving presence. (24) But by the free gift of God’s grace all are put right with him through Christ Jesus, who sets them free.
– Because we all have sinned (fallen short of God’s perfection), we need His gift of grace to be put back in a right standing with a Holy and Perfect God.
– The excellent news that we are given by our loving Creator, is that His gift of grace is FREE. (Vs.23)
– Again, I would remind you that if you had to earn this grace, it would be a wage and not a gift.
– SEE Romans 6:23 For sin pays its wage—death; but God’s free gift is eternal life in union with Christ Jesus our Lord.
If you believe in an All-knowing God, (A God who knows the past, present, and future.) you have to believe that God knew that our first parents, Adam and Eve, would fail to obey the command to not eat of the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17 Then the LORD God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to cultivate it and guard it. (16) He told him, “You may eat the fruit of any tree in the garden, (17) except the tree that gives knowledge of what is good and what is bad. You must not eat the fruit of that tree; if you do, you will die the same day.”).
– That foreknowledge of a loving Creator God would explain why it is said that God had the plan of sending Jesus to be our Savior before the world was even created. (Ephesians 1:4 Even before the world was made, God had already chosen us to be his through our union with Christ, so that we would be holy and without fault before him. Because of his love.)
– So God Almighty sent Jesus to be the author of our salvation, by taking our place in death, and overcoming death therefore giving all who acknowledge His payment for their sins, to receive His gift of eternal life with Him in a wonderful New Earth under a New Heaven.
Why is Jesus the ‘gift’ of Christmas?
– He is our FREE GIFT… We don’t have to pay for His sacrifice to redeem us from all sin.
– However, this gift can be accepted or rejected (pushed aside). – To sadly true!
– And hopefully we have realized the fact that this gift was given by someone who was thinking about us. (John 3:16 For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.)
Closing with Luke 2:9-11 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone over them. They were terribly afraid, (10) but the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I am here with good news for you, which will bring great joy to all the people. (11) This very day in David’s town your Savior was born—Christ the Lord!
— Let’s celebrate God giving us the greatest gift we could ever receive…
And have a Wonderful Christmas! …KRK
