Walking with God

Walking with God…                   (Pg# 1)

In appreciation of our walk with Him, we open with the lyrics of a familiar hymn.

In the Garden…  Author: C. Austin Miles (1912)

1) I come to the garden alone, While the dew is still on the roses;
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear, The Son of God discloses.

Refrain:
And He walks with me, and He talks with me, And He tells me I am His own,
And the joy we share as we tarry there, None other has ever known.

2) He speaks, and the sound of His voice Is so sweet the birds hush their singing;
And the melody that He gave to me… Within my heart is ringing. [Refrain]

3) I’d stay in the garden with Him… Tho’ the night around me be falling;
But He bids me go; thro’ the voice of woe, His voice to me is calling. [Refrain]

This song speaks of a close relationship with God…

We are going to look at how these Bible passages reveal important factors about our own ‘walk with God’…

Micah 6:6-8 (GNB) What shall I bring to the LORD, the God of heaven, when I come to worship him? Shall I bring the best calves to burn as offerings to him? (7) Will the LORD be pleased if I bring him thousands of sheep or endless streams of olive oil? Shall I offer him my first-born child to pay for my sins? (8) No, the LORD has told us what is good. What he requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God.

Isaiah 30:20-21 (GNB)  The Lord will make you go through hard times, but he himself will be there to teach you, and you will not have to search for him any more. (21) If you wander off the road to the right or the left, you will hear his voice behind you saying, “Here is the road. Follow it.”

Psalm 25:1-5 (GNB) A psalm of David – To you, O LORD, I offer my prayer; (2) in you, my God, I trust. Save me from the shame of defeat; don’t let my enemies gloat over me!
(3) Defeat does not come to those who trust in you, but to those who are quick to rebel against you. (4) Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. (5) Teach me to live according to your truth, for you are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you.

1st John 1:5-9 (GNB) Now the message that we have heard from his Son and announce is this: God is light, and there is no darkness at all in him. (6) If, then, we say that we have fellowship with him, yet at the same time live in the darkness, we are lying both in our words and in our actions. (7) But if we live in the light—just as he is in the light—then we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from every sin. (8) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us.
(9) But if we confess our sins to God, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing.

As we close and enter our prayer-time, isn’t it a remarkable and incredible blessing to be able to bring our requests to an Almighty God, who is also our close and true friend?

From the Worship song, ‘Who you say I am’
Who the Son sets free, is free indeed… I’m a child of God. Yes, I am.
In my Father’s house, There’s a place for me… I’m a child of God. Yes, I am.
I am chosen, Not forsaken… I am who You say I am.
You are for me, Not against me… I am who You say I am.

I present an answer-page here, to aid in discussions… These are answers I recorded from one of our Bible study groups.

Some answers we found as to how these Bible passages reveal our own ‘walk with God’…

  1. What shall I bring to the LORD? – To walk with God we must understand that He doesn’t desire our material sacrifices, for He doesn’t need any of these. What God desires from those who wish to ‘walk with Him’, is their commitment to be in His service… He desires us, not our things.
  2. To walk with God we need to have a change of spirit… no longer should we desire advancement and personal gain, instead we should only desire to do GOOD:
    – Therefore we should have a passion for justice especially in our own actions.
  3. God also requires of us to have a heart full of love for all people, even the outsider.
  4. God requires humility… Both in our relationship with others, but especially before God Himself.

Isaiah 30:20-21 (GNB)  The Lord will make you go through hard times, but he himself will be there to teach you, and you will not have to search for him any more. (21) If you wander off the road to the right or the left, you will hear his voice behind you saying, “Here is the road. Follow it.”

Who is giving us direction here?

  1. The short answer to this question is, God’s Holy Spirit. (He is with us to direct us.)
  2. To walk with God is going to require strength of commitment, trust, and character.
    – Can anything separate us from the love of Christ? (SEE Romans 8:35)
    Therefore, God leads us through ‘hard times’ so as to make our faith stronger.
  3. We will also find God is right there with us in ALL THINGS, to teach us to follow His victorious ways.

Any insights about King David’s walk with God here?

  1. To you, O LORD, I offer my prayer… To walk with God we need to keep in touch with Him through our prayers, as we read was the practice of King David.
  2. In you, my God, I trust… To walk with God we first need to ‘trust Him’.
  3. Saving us from “the shame of defeat;” and preventing our enemies from gloating
    – This is for the preservation of the fear and respect for God’s name, and surprisingly, even for the sake of those enemies… For how can they be convicted and saved from their sin, if they see themselves as stronger than a convicting God?
  4. Teach me your ways, O LORD; make them known to me. – Again, to successfully TEACH US HIS WAYS, God must be able to walk in a relationship of God the TEACHER and you and I, the students.
  5. You are my God, who saves me. I always trust in you. – We can remember the various battles David fought in which God gave him the victory… Thus saved and his faith strengthened, David was set up for even greater victories ahead.

Any insights on walking with God here?

  1. God is light, and there is no darkness at all in him… You cannot walk with God if your heart is full of ‘darkness’ and sin.
  2. In the light—then we have fellowship with one another… This isn’t talking about ‘church fellowship’, this is speaking of our close fellowship with Jesus Himself.
  3. If we say that we have no sin… We are professing and perhaps even living a lie. Therefore our pride and ego is definitely halting any ability to humbly walk with God.
  4. But if we confess our sins to God… This is an act of intimacy, for we must certainly expose our innermost being and thoughts to a loving, compassionate, and forgiving Lord God.
    – Walking with such a loving Creator God, involves this intimacy of relationship.
  5. God’s own actions through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross (for our sins), grants us God’s forgiveness and purifies us so that we can continue to walk with Him. (PTL!)
