‘My Living Hope’ – Songwriters: Brian Johnson, Phil Wickham.
(Graciously granted for non-commercial use only.)
(*1) How great the chasm that lay between us, How high the mountain I could not climb,
(*2) In desperation, I turned to heaven, And spoke your name into the night.
Then through the darkness, Your loving kindness, Tore through the shadows of my soul.
(*3) The work is finished, the end is written, Jesus Christ, my living hope.
(*4) Who could imagine so great a mercy? What heart could fathom such boundless grace?
The God of ages stepped down from glory, To wear my sin and bear my shame.
(*5) The cross has spoken, I am forgiven, The king of kings calls me His own.
Beautiful Savior, I’m yours forever, Jesus Christ, my living hope.
(*6) Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free… Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me,
You have broken every chain, There’s salvation in your name…
Jesus Christ, my living hope. …(X2)
Then came the morning that sealed the promise, Your buried body began to breathe.
Out of the silence, the roaring lion, Declared the grave has no claim on me.
(*7) Then came the morning that sealed the promise, Your buried body began to breathe.
Out of the silence, the roaring lion, Declared the grave has no claim on me…
Jesus, yours is the victory, whoa!
Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free… Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me,
You have broken every chain, There’s salvation in your name.
Jesus Christ, my living hope…
Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free… Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me,
You have broken every chain, There’s salvation in your name…
Jesus Christ, my living hope… Jesus Christ, my living hope.
Oh God, you’re my living hope!
— A study (by the numbers) of these powerful lyrics…
(*1) How great the chasm that lay between us, How high the mountain I could not climb…
SEE Romans 3:23 (ESV) for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God…
— Q1. Do you believe that God accepts our little sins?
O – No, that is why we need others to pray us out of purgatory. O – Yes, because none of us a perfect.
O – No, but when we repent of every sin, Jesus’ sacrifice makes us completely clean (again).
— Q2. Why can’t God overlook and accept our little sinful ways?
O – He does, so we don’t need to fuss over little failures. O – This is because God is pure and Holy.
— Q3. Why does God’s Holiness ban our little sins from existing in His presence? Is He being harsh?
O – God is not harsh, He’s just so completely Holy that any sin cannot exist in His presence.
O – Yes, God is being harsh and requiring something that we can’t ever deliver.
O – (I have something to add.) _________________________________________________________

Let’s continue to look at these lyrics… (Pg.#2)
(*2) In desperation, I turned to heaven, And spoke your name into the night.
Then through the darkness, Your loving kindness, Tore through the shadows of my soul.
— Q4. Mark the points that you find the writers make in these verses… (Be prepared to elaborate.)
O – In our desperation we should look to God. O – In times of trouble we need to cry out to Jesus.
O – All those who truly seek Jesus will find Him. O – We should eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we die.
SEE John 19:28-30… After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” (29) A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth. (30) When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
(*3) The work is finished, the end is written, Jesus Christ, my living hope…
— Q5. Mark the points that you find the writers make in this verse… (Be prepared to elaborate.)
O – There is nothing we can add to Jesus’ gift of salvation. O – Our future in Christ is certain.
O – The hope we have in Jesus is more than wishful thinking. O – All is lost, Jesus is dead.
SEE Acts 2:22-24… “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— (23) this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. (24) God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.
(*4) Who could imagine so great a mercy? What heart could fathom such boundless grace?
The God of ages stepped down from glory, To wear my sin and bear my shame.
— Q6. Which verse in Acts 2 describes God’s plan to have Jesus step down from His glory?
Acts 2 verse… O – 22 O – 23 O – 24
(*5) The cross has spoken, I am forgiven, The king of kings calls me His own.
Beautiful Savior, I’m yours forever, Jesus Christ, my living hope.
We return to Romans 3:23-25… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, (24) and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, (25) whom God put forward as a propitiation (Meaning: to appease. …KK) by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
(*6) Hallelujah, praise the one who set me free… Hallelujah, death has lost its grip on me,
You have broken every chain, There’s salvation in your name… Jesus Christ, my living hope.
— Q7. Mark the aspects of PRAISE that you find in these lines from our song…
We praise God for this salvation which grants us… O – freedom. O – eternal life. O – deliverance.
(*7) Then came the morning that sealed the promise, Your buried body began to breathe.
Out of the silence, the roaring lion, Declared the grave has no claim on me…
Jesus, yours is the victory, whoa!
Reread Acts 2:24… – Then write any inspirations you gain from these lines of our song.
