Name of God #6 of 15 – El Shaddai

Name of God #6 of 15 – El Shaddai – All Sufficient One

[Quote from Megan Allen Ministries – There is no desire, need, or weakness that cannot be fulfilled or provided for by God Himself. His grace is sufficient for us. He is God Almighty!
And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. – 2 Corinthians 12:9…end of quote.]

We find the original use of this Hebrew name for God in Genesis 17, where God Himself gives Abram this name by which Abram will come to know Him.

Genesis 17:1-6 (KJV)  And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.  (2)  And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.  (3)  And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,  (4)  As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.  (5)  Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.  (6)  And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

— You may note that the King James Version translates this quite correctly from “Shaddai El” as “Almighty God”, whereas we are looking at it meaning “All Sufficient One”.
— Let’s use that seeming discrepancy as a teaser to get into what this name for God should mean to us personally.

Q1. What is the purpose of God in using this name “Almighty God” to introduce Himself to Abram in Genesis 17:1-6?
God is saying that He is…
O – God who keeps His promise.     O – God of passing interest.

O – God who makes empty promises.

Q2. What is God promising Abram?

Q3. Could you say that Jehovah is telling Abram that He is God who is all sufficient to keep this promise? – We see the term “All Sufficient One” puts into action the idea of our “Almighty God”.

Even though 2nd Corinthians12:9 doesn’t use the name “All Sufficient One”, it does portray this same nature of our God whose grace is sufficient for us to make His power shine out through our own weaknesses. – (Discuss how that sometimes works out in our own experiences.)

Another scripture that speaks of God’s ability to accomplish His will:

Romans 8:31  What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

(Discuss what El Shaddai means to you, and then take this promise to our prayer time.)

Current events hold the truth and the continuing power of a promise of El Shaddai.

As many in this world seem to be turning against the Nation of Israel… Remember that our “God All Sufficient” is always able to keep His promises, such as in Isaiah 41:8-13 (ESV) But you, Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham, my friend;  (9)  you whom I took from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, “You are my servant, I have chosen you and not cast you off”;  (10)  fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.  (11)  Behold, all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded; those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish.  (12)  You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them; those who war against you shall be as nothing at all.  (13)  For I, the LORD your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”

God bless you all! …(KRK)
