Jehovah Nissi

Jehovah Nissi – Lord My Banner (This name is used more in the sense of carrying God’s name before them as we carry a flag that represents who we are as a people.)

1/ In Exodus 15, we found the people of Israel celebrating the defeat of their Egyptian pursuers.

2/ Then in Exodus 16:2-4 we see as that after crossing the Red Sea they are travelling through the wilderness, with the various hardships that entails.  And how the people grumbled against Moses saying, “Would that we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
— God tells Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.”

— So the ‘Lord their provider’ once again provides for them as they continue to follow Him.

3/ Then the Israelites moved on from the wilderness and camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink… And they demanded of Moses, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

In Exodus 17:1-7 God heard their grumbling and provided water for them to drink from the rock of Horeb.

4/ Now in Exodus 17:8-14 the people of Amalek come and fight Israel at Rephidim. God uses the leadership of Moses, with the support of Hur and Joshua, to give Israel the victory.

Exodus 17:15 And Moses built an altar and called the name of it, The LORD Is My Banner

— We see here Moses names the altar  so they will have that permanent reminder of how the Lord went before them in battle to lead them to victory over their enemies, the Amalekites.

As New Testament followers of God, we also remember that it was Jesus who gave us the victory.
SEE – 1st Corinthians 15:54-57 (ESV) When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” (55) “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?”  (56)  The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. (57) But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

We must always remember who gives us the victory over sin. The name of Jesus, when spoken by a believer in faith, has power to overcome any power of darkness we may encounter… PTL!
