Name of God #3 of 15 – Adonai
[Quote from Megan Allen Ministries – Adonai – Lord
Before we can know our everlasting God according to many of His other names in the Bible, we must know Him as our Adonai. He must be our Lord and master. As our Creator and our Redeemer, He is worthy of our lives lived in surrender to His loving lordship.
— For I know that the Lord is great and that our Lord is above all gods. – Psalm 135:5
— (21) “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. (22) Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ (23) And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’ – Matthew 7:21-23 …end of quote.]
(KRK) – SEE Matthew 7:21(a)… “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven” – Let’s investigate what God being our Lord means…
In Psalm 135 the word LORD is used 20 times, in the English Standard Version of the Bible.
— I’ve included the Hebrew root words of what we read as LORD in verses 1-6 of Psalm 135…
Psalm 135:1-6 (ESV) Praise the LORD (Jah)! Praise the name of the LORD (Jehovah), give praise, O servants of the LORD (Jehovah), (2) who stand in the house of the LORD (Jehovah), in the courts of the house of our God! (3) Praise the LORD (Jah), for the LORD (Jehovah) is good; sing to his name, for it is pleasant! (4) For the LORD (Jah) has chosen Jacob for himself, Israel as his own possession. (5) For I know that the LORD (Jehovah) is great, and that our Lord (Adonai) is above all gods. (6) Whatever the LORD (Jehovah) pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.
— This is a small example of the diversity of meaning contained in God’s names.
From Vs.1 – Praise the LORD (Jah)! Praise the name of the LORD (Jehovah)…
Jah is a shortened form of Jehovah, and meaning the same – “Jah, the Lord, most vehement.”
— This is a HALLELUJAH form of the sacred name of God, Jehovah.
— Best exampled by the spirited meaning we often use in our acronym, PTL! – However with a more reverent attitude.
— In other words, Jehovah and Jah are the same, but Jah is a more excited use of this sacred name.
We come to the name of God of focus in Vs.5(b)… and that our Lord (Adonai) is above all gods.
— The use of this name for God denotes a personal claim of Lordship, meaning, “Our Lord”.
Let’s draw this knowledge from the use of the name Adonai, in our Bible study today.
Q1. How do you see God’s Lordship in your life?
O – I’m a proud, independent, person, I bow to no-one.
O – I know God made me, and cares for His creations, so I gladly accept His rule over my life.
O – I know there is a Creator God, so we are His to control.

Psalm 135:5 For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord (Adonai) is above all gods.
I want us to ask ourselves: “Am I glad to serve my Lord?”
Another way of saying that would be to ask, “Would I rather serve some other Lord?”
A Bible commentary by F. B. Meyer states…
“This psalm begins and ends with Hallelujah
— The moral of it all is that if we would praise God aright and with zest, we must carefully gather our materials and meditate on all His dealings with us. These are fuel for the flame. But how many more reasons than the psalmist had are there for us to praise Him, who have been adopted into His family and made joint-heirs with Christ!”
What a great insight into our motivations for serving the Lord our God.

It is good to share our concerns with trusted fellow believers, for God commands that we care about each other, and those caring prayers will reach Our Lord’s (Adonai’s) throne.
Psalm 135:13-14 tells us… Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, throughout all ages. (14) For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants.
With those thoughts we will enter into our time of prayer. …(KRK)
