(putting on the armor of God – From Ephesians 6:10-20)

Ephesians 6:16 In all circumstances take up the *shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one…

* Having and using your faith is a very LARGE subject… Let’s allow God’s Word to teach us.

— I have selected various scriptures that touch on our faith and I would like you to discern what, “FLAMING DARTS sent from of the evil one”, each verse speaks to… (ESV Bible used here)

Matthew 6:30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

— Q1(a) Which doubts is Jesus addressing here? (Read Matthew 6:31 to answer.)

O – How can we clothe ourselves?     O – How can we feed ourselves?     O – What shall we drink?

— Q1(b) (Read Matthew 6:19-34 and discuss.) What are we to do with this lesson from Jesus?

NEXT, Read Matthew 8:5-13… Matthew 8:10 When Jesus heard this, he marveled and said to those who followed him, “Truly, I tell you, with no one in Israel have I found such faith.

— Q2(a) What standard of faith did this Roman present to Jesus here?

O – That Jesus could give some medication that would heal his servant.

O – That Jesus could give him a special incantation that he could say to heal his servant.

O – That Jesus could just say the word and his servant would be healed.

— Q2(b) (For discussion) How can we apply this faith in Jesus to our lives?

— Q2(c) (For discussion) Which of these do you see in this centurion’s act of faith?

O – He cared about his servant.     O – He believed in the authority of Jesus     O – He believed in rituals.

NEXT, read Matthew 14:22-33… Matthew 14:31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

— Q3(a). Who displayed the most faith here?

O – The disciples who stayed in the boat     O – Peter, who believed Jesus could enable him to walk on water.

— Q3(b) (For discussion) Why did some remain in the boat, when Peter asked if he could walk on water?

— Q4(a) What happened to Peter’s faith in verse 30?

O – He saw the physical realities.     O – He started to doubt that he could walk on water.

O – He tripped over a wave.

— Q4(b) (For discussion) Have you ever faced any of the following doubts?

O – Maybe God can’t heal me.     O – Maybe God won’t heal me.     O – Maybe God doesn’t want to heal me.

O – Maybe this is a judgment from God.     O – How can God love me?     O – How can God use useless me?

If we ever doubt that God loves us, our faith goes out the window.

— In closing read John 15:14-17 (ESV) You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.

Can you find in these words of Jesus, the topics of…  O – Obedience.     O – Knowledge.     O – Purpose.

O – Friendship.     O – Asking in Jesus’ name.     O – The fraternal love for one another.

Closing thought… How do these instructions from Jesus apply to His promise from John 15:16?

So that whatever you ask the Father in my name, He may give it to you.”
