Jesus teaches on mental health

Jesus teaches on mental health… — English Standard Version of the Bible used.      (Pg1)
(Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount cont’d) – Record your comments and mark your choices.

Last study we looked at Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV) “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, (20) but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (21) For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Jesus continues in Matthew 6:22-23 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, (23) but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of *darkness. If then the light in you is **darkness, how great is the **darkness!”
Eng.*darkness – Grk. Skoteinos (skot-i-nos’); overtaken by darkness or nighttime.
Eng.**darkness – Grk. Skotos (skot’-os); simply, darkness.

Jesus is talking of living with spiritual understanding, therefore when He says:

— “Your eye is healthy” means that you can understand spiritual truths.

— “Your eye is bad” means that you cannot understand important spiritual matters.

SEE: 2nd Corinthians 4:3-6 (ESV) And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. (4) In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. (5) For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. (6) For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Q1. From this scripture, who do we find blinding people and keeping them from seeing the light of the gospel?

☐ Servants of Jesus.      ☐ “The god of this world”, Satan.      ☐ God.

Also SEE: Philippians 4:5-8… Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; (6) do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. (7) And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (8) Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Q2. Does this (Philippians 4:5-8) tell us anything about keeping your “eye healthy”? Comments:___________________________________________________________________

Q3. When suffering anxiety, what remedy is found in Philippians 4:6? …(Reread)

Matthew 6:24-25
“No one can serve two *masters, for either he will *hate the one and *love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and *money. (25) “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Eng. *Master – Grk. Kurios (koo’-ree-os); one who is supreme in authority.
Eng. *Hate – Grk. Miseō (mis-eh’-o) to detest; in context here, meaning, to love less.
Eng. *Love – Grk. agapaō (ag-ap-ah’-o); to love in a social or moral sense.
Eng. *Money (mammon) – Grk. mammōnas (mam-mo-nas’) here meaning, wealth, or avarice.

Q4. Do you think there are more than two “masters” to serve in this life?
(SEE Joshua 24:14-16; 1st John 2:15-16; 2nd Corinthians 4:3-5)… — In added Bible references.

Q5. When rejecting God’s Word, guidance, and commands who’s example do we follow?

☐ The example of Satan.      ☐ The example of Jesus. – (Can you think of bible references?)

Q6. Which master wants us to constantly be worrying about finances and necessities?
☐ The master of this world, Satan.          ☐ The soon coming King of kings, Jesus.

Q7. Jesus taught us to pray “Give us this day our daily bread” – Can that help our anxieties?

Therefore, as we move to a time of prayer, let’s bring our concerns and needs (for others and ourselves), to the Lord and leave them in His care, knowing that He hears us, that He loves us, and that He will always do what is best for us.

— In the next study we find Jesus teaching more about anxiety. …(KRK)
