Under His wings – In times of sorrow…

Under His wings – A study in song for when we are hurting…

A brief  INTRO: The Lord gave me this inpiration for our group’s study, two days before we heard of the Tumbler Ridge school shooting. This tragedy occurred in our area of Northern British Columbia… I am certain it was meant to be a comfort to all of us who were shocked by such a tragic loss of lives. (KRK)

We look at the lyrics of the hymn Under His Wings, written by William Cushing in 1896…

Vs.1/ Under His wings I am safely abiding. Though the night deepens and tempests are wild,
still I can trust Him; I know He will keep me. He has redeemed me, and I am His child.

Q1a. — What do these lyrics bring to your thoughts?

Q1b. — What does this Refrain add to the thoughts of verse #1?

Under His wings, under His wings, who from His love can sever?
Under His wings my soul shall abide, safely abide forever.

Vs. 2/ Under His wings, what a refuge in sorrow! How the heart yearningly turns to His rest!
Often when earth has no balm for my healing, there I find comfort, and there I am blest.

Q2a. – Of what time of human need does Verse 2 address?

☐ When suffering from insomnia…     ☐ A time of loss…     ☐ When getting married…

Q2b. – Any testimony of how God gives us comfort and rest during these times?

Vs.3/ Under His wings, O what precious enjoyment! There will I hide till life’s trials are o’er;
sheltered, protected, no evil can harm me. Resting in Jesus, I’m safe evermore.

Q3. Under God’s protection, have you ever found “enjoyment” during times of trial?

☐ Yes…     ☐ No…

Please share your testimony…

SEE Psalm 91:1-4 (ESV)  He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.  (2)  I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”  (3)  For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.  (4)  He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

— We closed with a special time of prayer for all the grieving families of those who’s lives were cut so
tragically short, in the school shooting just a day before…

*Whenever we pray, I hope we always find that time of rest in our loving God.*
