#12 – Jehovah Mekoddishkem – Lord Who Sanctifies…

This is a name that God tells Moses the Israelites should know Him by… Found in Exodus 31:12-13… And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, “Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify you.”

* The word found in the original Hebrew was the verb ‘kadash’, which means “to be holy,” “to consecrate,” or “to set apart” for a sacred purpose.

— The suffix -kem indicates “you” in the plural, so the full term literally translates as “He who sanctifies you” or “The Lord who makes you holy”.

— When combined with Jehovah (God’s personal name), the full name Jehovah Mekoddishkem means “The Lord Who Sanctifies” or “The Lord who sets you apart”

 

No amount of discipline or effort of our own can make us Holy to stand before the Lord God. As we read in Colossians 2:13-14 (ESV) And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, (14) by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.
— Our inability to become Holy is best understood by the use of this term used here, “And you, who were dead in your trespasses…” – Can a dead body do anything? …Not at all! The dead cannot even bury themselves, they have no ability to do anything.

— That is who we all are under the curse of sin-death brought about by our fall in the Garden of Eden.

** However, Thanks to our ‘God Who Sanctifies’ us, we also read how God made provision fro us to be made alive again by the sacrifice of Jesus (God the Son), and only through this sacrificial ‘doorway’ are we able to be made Holy in God’s sight…

** SEE Ephesians 2:4-9 (ESV) But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,  (5)  even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—  (6)  and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,  (7)  so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.  (8)  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,  (9)  not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

 

Let us praise the Lord God Most Holy for His love, mercy and compassion on us for His unfathomable gift of sanctification through the shed blood of Jesus our Savior.
