Jesus counters what is being said.

About God’s Law… Jesus counters what is being said(Pg.1)
It is good to ask various people to read one segment of this teaching of Jesus…

#1/ Matthew 5:27-30  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  (28)  But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  (29)  If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.  (30)  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

#2/ Matthew 5:31-32  “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’  (32)  But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

#3/ Matthew 5:33-37  “Again you have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’  (34)  But I say to you, Do not take an oath at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,  (35)  or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.  (36)  And do not take an oath by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.  (37)  Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

#4/ Matthew 5:38-42  “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  (39)  But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.  (40)  And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.  (41)  And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.  (42)  Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

#5/ Matthew 5:43-48  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  (44)  But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,  (45)  so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.  (46)  For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?  (47)  And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?  (48)  You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

About God’s Law… Jesus counters what is being said.              (Pg.2)

After reading through this heavy-duty list of how God’s Law would affect contemporary life…

Q1. What is the common phrasing Jesus uses to start each of His comments on these Laws?

Q2. What is the common phrase Jesus uses to answer what is being said?

#1/ Matthew 5:27-30  “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  (28)  But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  (29)  If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.  (30)  And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

— It is being taught that ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

— And Jesus says, “that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Q3. What is the difference in what is being taught and what Jesus is teaching?

Q4. Do you think that Jesus is saying our body parts can cause us to sin?     ☐ Yes…     ☐ No…

Q5. Jesus is talking from a spiritual perspective, does this also reflect on the church body?

#2/ Matthew 5:31-32  “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’  (32)  But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

— This truly is a confusing matter in the Body of Christ today… For our laws and cultures tend to look at marriage and divorce in a more liberal way. – Slight political pun intended 😊.

Q6. But seriously, how do we get past the common factor in our culture of multiple divorces and remarriages? (I suggest the words of Jesus in John 8:11 Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.”)

About God’s Law… Jesus counters what is being said.              (Pg.3)

I am confident that as ‘saved by GRACE Christians’, we can handle these discussions in an understanding and compassionate way, seeking to be led by God’s Holy Spirit for wisdom in our answers.

Because this brings up more questions, such as…

Q7. What about abuse in a marriage? (SEE… 1st Peter 3:7; 1st John 4:7-8; Colossians 3:18-21)

Q8. Is there room for remarriage after a believer is divorced?

Comments:_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

On this point, I admire this counsel I borrowed from the Website: ‘Bible study for you’…
“As followers of Christ, we have the incredible gift of God’s grace, which opens doors to second chances in our lives. This concept becomes beautifully relevant when considering remarriage after divorce. We can take comfort in knowing that God offers forgiveness and restoration, regardless of our past mistakes or choices. Embracing this grace allows us to step confidently into new relationships, trusting that God’s mercy is always present, guiding our hearts and actions.” – Unquote.

(SEE… Psalm 147:3; Psalm 103:12; 1st John 1:9; John 8:11)

Q9. How should the church react to divorcees in their membership?

(SEE… Hebrews 4:12-13)

After discussion, we will go to a time of prayer with glad hearts for thanking God for His grace and loving kindness. …KRK
